INTR 452 - Interior Building Systems
Our project for this course was to design and build a scale model for a two story commercial space, complete with all structural elements, and building systems. Along with an interior space plan with fixtures and walls. The course has twelve assignments up to the final submissions and the e-portfolio and digital story. Below I am showcasing my final plan, model, schematic and all progress work, and my digital story.

Digital Story
Hello, I am Chase Durham and this is my digital story for INTR 452’s Interior Building Systems course. We completed one large semester project which included all framing, building systems, and interior space planning and framing for a two story commercial building. The building systems covered were structural, plumbing, HVAC, and electrical. I think the thing I learned most in this class was the importance of that plenum clear space between floors in order to fit in all the elements you need to and how to plan them out in the most effective way. I also feel like I learned a lot of building vocabulary and can better understand how the building is put together and why we can or cannot do certain things in the interior space because of them. I had never had to calculate for a structural system before this project and I think this is important to know in my future career when designing for new construction if I got hired at an architectural firm. I also learned about standard plumbing systems and sustainable plumbing systems. My project included a rainwater system and a grey water system. I enjoyed making the model for the plumbing because it was still hard to visualize after drawing the plans. A designer might want to add a bathroom or a sink somewhere in a project and I learned that we should understand if that is a viable thing to do or not considering the existing plumbing.I enjoyed learning how to draw these types of systems in revit, I think that it will be important in the future to show that we can read more extensive plans and understand the terminology. I didn’t realize how in-depth electrical could go. After seeing how many lights, switches, and outlets went into my building, I gained an appreciation for how accessible we make electricity in a space. This will influence my career, because as designers we can make suggestions for new lighting plans, replacing fixtures, adding fixtures, and all kinds of lighting design choices. Overall, I think I learned a substantial amount about building systems, along with how to draw them and how to model them.
